Qualified Custodian
A qualified custodian is an institution legally permitted to hold client digital assets under U.S. securities and banking regulations. Examples include state-chartered trust companies (BitGo, Anchorage, Coinbase Custody Trust), national banks with digital-asset charters, and SEC-registered broker-dealers.
For a crypto-backed mortgage, your collateral is transferred to a qualified custodian for the life of the loan. The custodian segregates client assets from its own balance sheet, reducing the risk of loss in the event of lender insolvency.
Why it matters for Milo customers
Milo uses Coinbase and BitGo as qualified custodians for pledged collateral. Both are SOC 2 Type II audited, regulated, and insured — meaning your crypto is held to the same operational standards as institutional assets.
